Natembeya Quits DAP-K After Fallout With Wamalwa, Signals New Political Direction Ahead of 2027
Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has announced his resignation from Eugene Wamalwa’s Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), citing irreconcilable differences over the party’s future direction as political realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on Wednesday, Governor Natembeya said his proposal to transform DAP-K from a largely regional outfit into a national political movement was rejected by the party leadership, prompting his decision to leave.
The resignation comes just days after Natembeya hosted Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna alongside Linda Mwananchi movement leaders at his Trans Nzoia residence. During the meeting, the leaders reportedly agreed to establish a new political outfit that will seek to influence Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the next general election.
According to allies close to the discussions, the new movement is planning a series of political rallies in Trans Nzoia and Bungoma later this month to unveil its agenda and mobilise grassroots support. The group is also said to be backing Senator Edwin Sifuna for a future presidential bid, while Natembeya is expected to concentrate on defending his Trans Nzoia governorship.
The latest development marks a significant shift in Kenya’s opposition politics and is expected to intensify political competition as parties reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
DAP-K had previously dismissed speculation of a fallout between Governor Natembeya and party leader Eugene Wamalwa, but the governor’s resignation now confirms growing divisions within the party.
