Absa Bank Kenya PLC has announced a major leadership transition following the resignation of its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abdi Mohamed, effective June 30, 2026.
Mohamed leaves the bank after an illustrious 32-year career within the Absa Group, including the last three years as CEO of Absa Bank Kenya. During his tenure, he led the institution through significant transformation, strengthening its resilience, accelerating business growth, and overseeing a period in which the bank’s share price doubled.
Board Chairman Mohammed Nyaoga praised Mohamed’s contribution, describing his leadership as instrumental in driving the bank’s success and thanked him for his dedication and service.
To ensure continuity, the Board has appointed Chief Financial Officer Yusuf Omari as Interim Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective July 1, 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. The Board has also begun the process of recruiting a substantive CEO.
Omari brings more than 20 years of experience in finance, strategy, risk management, ESG, and corporate governance.
The Board expressed confidence that his leadership will ensure the bank remains focused on delivering value to customers, shareholders, and other stakeholders while executing its long-term strategy.
In his farewell remarks, Mohamed described his three decades at Absa as one of the greatest privileges of his professional life, expressing gratitude to colleagues, customers, and the Board for their support. He said he leaves confident in the bank’s future under its experienced leadership team.
Mohamed will proceed on gardening leave while serving his notice period and will remain available to support the Board and management to facilitate a smooth leadership transition.
Absa Bank Kenya affirmed that it remains well-positioned for continued growth and strategic execution under its experienced leadership team during the transition period.
