Siaya Governor James Orengo joined thousands of Kenyans across Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and other parts of the country in commemorating the anniversary of the historic Gen Z protests, paying tribute to those who lost their lives during the June 2024 anti-Finance Bill demonstrations.
Governor Orengo praised the courage and resilience of citizens who participated in the commemorative activities, whether by taking to the streets or observing the day from their homes.
“The mask has completely fallen. It is now undeniably evident that the goons unleashed to harass peaceful citizens were state-sponsored and operating under police escort. But intimidation cannot silence a nation,” Orengo said.
The governor noted that despite challenges and resistance, protesters successfully marched to Parliament where they laid a wreath in honor of the young Kenyans who died during last year’s demonstrations.
He described the fallen protesters as heroes whose sacrifice continues to inspire the country’s pursuit of justice, accountability, and democratic freedoms.
“They tried to bury our youth; they forgot they were seeds. The struggle for a just Kenya continues,” he stated.
The anniversary events were marked by renewed calls for justice, protection of constitutional freedoms, and accountability for those responsible for the deaths and injuries witnessed during the 2024 protests.
Orengo urged Kenyans to remain steadfast in defending democracy and ensuring that the voices of young people continue to shape the country’s future.
