KISUMU RESIDENTS PROTEST AGAINST PLANNED GEN Z MEMORIAL DEMONSTRATIONS
Kisumu residents on Tuesday took to the streets to express their opposition to the planned Gen Z memorial demonstrations scheduled for tomorrow, saying they fear the protests could disrupt businesses, transport, and daily activities within the city.
The residents, carrying placards and chanting slogans calling for peace and stability, urged organizers of the demonstrations to pursue alternative avenues of remembrance that would not interfere with economic activities.
They maintained that while they respect the constitutional right to peaceful assembly and expression, public order and the livelihoods of ordinary citizens should also be safeguarded.
Several speakers during the demonstrations emphasized the need for national unity, dialogue, and peaceful engagement in addressing issues affecting the country’s youth. They called on security agencies to ensure the safety of all citizens and appealed for calm ahead of the planned memorial activities.
The planned Gen Z memorial demonstrations are intended to honour victims who lost their lives during last year’s anti-government protests. Organizers have maintained that the events will be peaceful and aimed at
commemorating those affected.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have urged all parties to exercise restraint, respect the law, and prioritize peace.
