The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has strongly condemned the recent by-elections conducted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), citing gross inefficiency and failure to uphold constitutional standards.
Speaking on behalf of LDP, Secretary General Dr. Denise Kodhe stated that IEBC must either reform immediately or resign, warning that inaction risks plunging the country into electoral chaos ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
“The recent by-elections were a test of IEBC’s capacity to conduct free, fair, and transparent elections. Unfortunately, the Commission has failed that test, demonstrating a lack of preparedness and adherence to constitutional requirements,” said Dr. Kodhe.
Dr. Kodhe urged opposition leaders, the media, civil society organizations, human rights groups, the international community, and Kenyan youth to hold IEBC accountable, emphasizing that:
Some Commissioners remain in office illegally, having failed the integrity vetting required by Chapter Six of the 2010 Constitution.
Continued inaction and poor leadership at IEBC threatens to undermine public trust and electoral credibility in 2027.
LDP has issued an ultimatum of three months for IEBC to reform its processes, ensure integrity and efficiency, or face mass mobilization and public protests demanding the removal of ineffective Commissioners.
Dr. Kodhe concluded,”IEBC must either rise to the occasion or step aside. Kenyans cannot be subjected to incompetence or risk electoral turmoil. The time for excuses is over.”
