Wajir County, Kenya –
President William Ruto has officially commissioned the new Accident and Emergency Wing at Wajir County Teaching and Referral Hospital, marking a major milestone in the Government’s efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve access to quality medical services in Northern Kenya.
The newly opened facility is a state-of-the-art investment designed to enhance emergency response and critical care services in the region. It features a fully equipped 12-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), modern orthopaedic, laparoscopic and general surgery theatres, and an ultra-modern medical ward fitted with centralised oxygen, compressed air and vacuum systems.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, President Ruto reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare for all Kenyans, regardless of their location.
“This facility represents our commitment to transforming healthcare services and ensuring that residents of Wajir and the wider Northern Kenya region have access to specialised medical treatment closer to home,” said the President.
The new Accident and Emergency Wing is expected to significantly improve patient outcomes by reducing referrals to distant hospitals, strengthening emergency response capabilities, and expanding access to advanced medical care.
The project is part of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s broader agenda to modernise healthcare facilities across the country, invest in critical health infrastructure, and improve the delivery of universal health coverage.
Residents and healthcare professionals have welcomed the development, describing it as a transformative investment that will enhance medical services, save lives, and contribute to the region’s socio-economic growth.
The commissioning of the facility underscores the Government’s determination to address historical disparities in healthcare access and ensure that every Kenyan benefits from modern and efficient health services.
