“Kenya’s Construction Boom Gets a Heavy Lift as JCB Unveils 34-Tonne Excavator for Mining and Mega Projects”
Kenya’s rapidly expanding infrastructure and mining sectors are set to benefit from the introduction of a powerful new heavy-duty excavator designed to handle large-scale earthmoving, quarrying, and mining operations across East Africa.

Ganatra Plant & Equipment Limited, the authorised dealer of JCB machinery in Kenya and Uganda, has officially launched the JCB 345 LC, a 34-tonne excavator engineered for demanding construction environments and high-capacity excavation work.
The new excavator is capable of digging up to 6.6 metres deep and is specifically designed to perform efficiently in hard rock excavation, mining sites, quarry operations, dam construction, and mass excavation projects.
The machine is now available at Ganatra’s Nairobi showroom located along Baba Dogo Road, while another unit has been stationed in Kampala to cater to the growing Ugandan market.
The launch comes amid increased investment in infrastructure development across Kenya and Uganda, where governments and private investors are accelerating projects in roads, urban development, mining, and energy sectors.
Speaking during the launch, Managing Director Altaf Ganatra said the excavator was introduced to meet the increasing demand for heavy machinery capable of supporting the region’s large-scale projects.
“The JCB 345 LC is the right machine for the scale of projects Kenya and Uganda are undertaking right now. We are proud to make it available to our customers,” he said.
Ganatra noted that increased activity in quarrying, mining, and infrastructure construction is driving the demand for larger and more productive equipment across the region.
“We have many quarries operating in Kenya and increasing mining activity. This machine is ideal for those sectors,” he added.
He further revealed that the company plans to introduce even larger machines in the near future, including a 50-tonne excavator currently under development.
At the heart of the JCB 345 LC is a 7.2-litre DIESELMAX engine producing 221 horsepower and 960 Nm of torque. According to the company, the engine has been fully developed by JCB, simplifying servicing and improving the availability of spare parts through Ganatra’s regional support network.
The excavator also features advanced variable-flow hydraulic pumps designed to enhance operational efficiency while reducing fuel consumption — a key advantage for contractors operating in remote locations and fuel-sensitive projects.
Industry stakeholders expect demand for heavy earthmoving machinery to continue rising as East African economies expand infrastructure and mining investments.
Ganatra says the introduction of the JCB 345 LC is aimed at helping contractors improve productivity, reduce operating costs, and meet the growing demands of modern construction and mining projects across the region.
