Raging Rains, Rising Waters: Government Issues Urgent Flood Alert as Tana Dams Hit Critical Levels

By News Desk

Government Spokesperson Hon. Sen. (Dr.) Isaac Mwaura has issued an urgent national update on the ongoing heavy rains and escalating flood risks across the country, calling for heightened public vigilance and cooperation with authorities.

The Government confirmed that sustained rainfall has led to significant rises in water levels across key dams within the Tana River cascade. As of the evening of April 28, 2026, Masinga Dam reached full capacity, prompting controlled water releases to protect its structural integrity. Other dams including Kamburu, Gitaru, and Kindaruma are also undergoing active regulation, with Kiambere Dam expected to begin spilling within the next five days due to continued inflows from the Aberdare and Mount Kenya regions.

These developments have heightened the risk of downstream flooding, particularly in Garissa and Tana River counties. The National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC), in collaboration with relevant agencies, continues to monitor the situation closely while coordinating emergency preparedness and response measures.

In Nairobi, the rains have already resulted in tragic loss of life. In Roysambu Sub-County, Zimmerman Location, a 29-year-old woman was swept away by fast-moving floodwaters near Turners Club on the night of April 28. Despite efforts by well-wishers to rescue her, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities, including officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kasarani, have documented the incident and commenced investigations. The Government has conveyed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and all those affected by the ongoing floods.

Flooding has also severely impacted parts of Kasarani Sub-County. The Gatharaini River has submerged the Street 13 bridge towards Mwiki, rendering it impassable. Several homes have been inundated, affecting dozens of households in Maanguo, Maternity, and Muirigo areas. In Mwiki Location, the Nairobi River remains swollen, with localized flooding reported along the Njeri House–Nyawai Road stretch. The Disaster Response Team, led by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), is actively responding to the situation.

The Government is urging residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas, especially in Garissa and Tana River counties, to move to safer ground and strictly adhere to official advisories. Kenyans are also encouraged to report emergencies promptly and cooperate fully with response teams on the ground.

With heavy rains expected to persist in several regions, the Government has reaffirmed its commitment to continuous surveillance, timely updates, and coordinated intervention efforts. Citizens are reminded that collective responsibility and preparedness remain key in minimizing the impact of this natural disaster.
