Homa Bay Governor Wanga Picks Roads Boss as Deputy —
By News Desk
Governor Gladys Wanga has nominated Danish Otieno Onyango as the new Deputy Governor following the resignation of the previous office holder. The nomination, announced via an Executive Order today, is in accordance with the County Governments Act and is pending approval by the Homa Bay County Assembly.
Onyango, a seasoned public servant, currently serves as County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Roads and Public Works. He previously rose through the ranks in national government, reaching the position of Undersecretary in the State Department of Infrastructure.
Governor Wanga highlighted Onyango’s accomplishments, noting:
Opening 736 kilometres of new roads in the 2024/25 financial year.
Maintenance of 538 kilometres of existing roads.
Rehabilitation of 116 kilometres of access roads.
Successful implementation of Ksh 1.4 billion KISIP II projects.
Supporting major national and county events hosted in Homa Bay.
If confirmed by the County Assembly, Onyango will retain his Roads and Public Works portfolio while serving as Deputy Governor — a move already stirring debate about concentration of power and workload management.
New Cabinet Nominations
In a wider cabinet reshuffle aimed at boosting service delivery, Governor Wanga also announced:
Elijah Obiny Dede (Ndhiwa Constituency) as CECM for Trade, Industry, Tourism, Marketing, and Co-operative Development.
Governor Wanga stated that the nominations reflect her administration’s commitment to efficiency, continuity, and performance-driven leadership.
