Abdulswamad Nassir, the Governor of Mombasa, has affirmed that leaders and residents from the Coast region are ready to work closely with William Ruto to accelerate development and address historical injustices that have long affected the region.

Speaking after attending the President’s Iftar dinner at State House Mombasa, Governor Nassir noted that the Coast region has for decades faced marginalization and has often been treated as a second-class part of Kenya. He emphasized that the time has come for the region to reclaim its rightful place in national development.

According to the Governor, recent progress demonstrates that change is already underway. He highlighted that residents of the Coast are now accessing national identity cards as a right rather than a privilege, marking a significant shift toward inclusion and equal citizenship.

Governor Nassir further revealed that Mombasa currently leads the country in registrations under the Social Health Authority (SHA), a move he said reflects the county’s commitment to expanding access to healthcare and government services.

The Governor also welcomed renewed national attention on the long-standing squatter problem that has affected many families in the region. He noted that ongoing support from the national government to facilitate land acquisition from willing landlords could finally provide lasting solutions for thousands of affected residents.

Looking ahead, Nassir called for the deliberate and targeted deployment of the proposed National Infrastructure Fund to the Coast region to help address years of underdevelopment in key sectors such as infrastructure, housing, and economic opportunities.

“This is not about politics for politics’ sake,” Nassir said. “It is about justice, dignity, and ensuring the people of the Coast finally get their fair share of opportunity, infrastructure, and inclusion.”

The Iftar event brought together Coast leaders, residents, and the Governor’s party leader, Oburu Oginga, in a show of unity and cooperation aimed at advancing development and improving the livelihoods of communities across the region.
