Kenya to Commence Construction of New Airport in June, President Ruto Announces
President William Ruto has announced that Kenya will begin construction of a new international airport in June, signaling a major shift in the government’s aviation infrastructure strategy.
The Head of State said the decision follows extensive public debate and opposition surrounding the proposed renovation of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), which had been earmarked for upgrade through a partnership with India’s Adani Group.
The JKIA renovation plan had sparked nationwide criticism, with many Kenyans raising concerns over transparency, ownership terms, national sovereignty, and long-term financial implications.
Civil society groups, opposition leaders, and sections of the public questioned the structure of the proposed agreement.
Speaking during a public address, President Ruto stated that the government had listened to the concerns of citizens and would now pursue the development of a new airport facility to meet Kenya’s growing aviation demands.
“Kenya must expand its aviation infrastructure to remain competitive as a regional hub. We will begin the construction of a new airport in June to secure our future growth,” the President said.
JKIA, East Africa’s busiest airport, has long faced capacity challenges amid increasing passenger and cargo traffic. The government maintains that expanding aviation infrastructure is critical to boosting trade, tourism, and Kenya’s position as a regional logistics hub.
However, critics argue that questions still remain over financing, location, procurement processes, and whether the new project will undergo robust public participation and parliamentary oversight.
Political observers say the announcement marks a significant policy shift and could reshape Kenya’s infrastructure development model moving forward.
More details regarding the airport’s location, funding model, and construction partners are expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
