Storm Over LSK Polls: Questions Arise as Kanjama Overtakes Wanyama Amid Heavy Police Presence

Tension has gripped the ongoing elections of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) following a dramatic shift in the presidential race that has sparked concern among sections of the membership.Earlier in the vote tallying process, presidential candidate Patrick had appeared to have a strong footing in the race.

However, developments later in the day saw candidate Kanjama surge ahead under circumstances that some supporters have described as unexpected and troubling. The situation escalated further after police officers were deployed to secure the voting and tallying centres. While authorities indicated that the move was aimed at maintaining order, a section of lawyers allied to Peter Wanyama have expressed discomfort, alleging that the presence of security officers may have influenced the electoral environment.

Supporters of Wanyama have raised questions over transparency and consistency in the vote tallying process, with some going as far as blaming external interference and accusing government elements of orchestrating what they termed as a “mess” in the election.

However, election officials have maintained that the process remains lawful, transparent, and within the society’s constitutional framework. The Presiding Officer reiterated that security deployment was purely precautionary to ensure peace and protect the integrity of the exercise.

The LSK presidential contest is one of the most closely watched professional elections in the country, given the Society’s critical role in defending constitutionalism, rule of law, and governance accountability. As vote counting continues, stakeholders are calling for calm, urging members to allow the electoral process to conclude peacefully and for any disputes to be addressed through the established legal and institutional mechanisms within the Society.

The outcome of the election is expected to shape the future direction of the Law Society of Kenya at a time when the country is experiencing heightened legal and political debate.
