Soccer superstar Kylian Mbappé says there is no “frustration” over not yet winning a Ballon d’Or – an annual award given to the world’s best player – but tells CNN’s Amanda Davies that this “could be a good year for me.”

Mbappé did not win any silverware last season, finishing fourth at the World Cup with France and failing to win a trophy with Real Madrid.

But speaking to CNN amid a new sponsorship deal with sportswear brand On, he says he still has a chance of winning, arguing that the award should be given to the best individual player.

“Football is a collective sport, but there are collective trophies to represent that collective supremacy,” he told Davies. “When you talk about the Ballon d’Or, you give it to one player, so you give it to the best player.”

“A frustration? No,” he told Davies about never having won it.

“Because, as a competitor, you always want to win everything. So at the end of the day, of course you want to win it, every player wants to win it, but we have to wait.”

And although falling just short of winning a second World Cup trophy with France, Mbappé also had a tournament to remember. The 27-year-old became the World Cup’s all-time top scorer, netting a record-breaking 22nd goal during the third-place playoff against England.

“It’s something that I couldn’t imagine,” he says about the achievement. “At the end of the day, it’s part of history, part of the legacy that I want to build.”

Key quotes from Kylian Mbappé:

Kylian Mbappé on whether he’s frustrated at not yet having won the Ballon d’Or and whether he can do this year:

“Frustration? No because as a competitor you always want to win everything. So at the end of the day of course you want to win it, every player wants to win it but we have to wait. We have few players in the race right now and we’re gonna see what’s gonna happen in October and but I think it can be a good year for me.”

Kylian Mbappé on what players should be judged on for this year’s Ballon d’Or:

“I think when you talk about the Ballon d’Or, you talk about individual awards, so it’s individual performance, the guy who will write history will show on the biggest scene that is the best player in the world. So at the end for me it always has to be the case when you talk about the Ballon d’Or, you give to one player, so you give to the best player and the guy who show you that he’s the best and show that in every big competition shows something.”

Kylian Mabppé on France’s performance at this summer’s FIFA World Cup in North America:

“We were a great team, everybody saw we are one of the best teams in the world, everybody saw, but we have to work on the details to be the best team in the world, and I think also everybody saw this. So at the end of the day it was an amazing experience for us because I think we gave pleasure to the fans all around the world, but we didn’t achieve what we wanted to achieve but I cannot say it’s a failure because it would be unfair for everything we did, but at the end of the day, the details are really important when you want to be the very best.”

Kylian Mbappé on becoming the all-time top goalscorer at the men’s FIFA World Cup this past summer’s tournament in North America:

“It’s something that I couldn’t imagine to be able to be the best scorer of the whole time of the World Cup, the competition who saw all the greatest player of all time, all the greatest athletes, all the greatest icons that I idolized when I was younger, and to be able to be this guy at only 27, it’s sound surreal, but at the end of the day it’s part of history, part of the legacy that I want to build in the world of football and I want to still achieve many things in the World Cup and in every competition that I can play.”

Kylian Mbappé on the working with the new France men’s national team coach Zinedine Zidane:

“Pretty nice! Amazing! Another era star in the national team. We are really happy to have him. Let’s see what we’re going to do. I think everybody expected a lot from us, from him also so because what he means for us as French people, but it’s a good pressure because at the end of the day it’s football and we can’t wait to play and win games.”

Kylian Mbappé on ending his 20-year journey with Nike and signing for Swiss sportswear brand, On:

“It’s a new chapter, a new challenge, a new opportunity. I think it’s also part of a moment in my life that I want to change, I had an evolution as a person, as a player, of course everybody saw, but, as a person also I wanted something different. I wanted to be at the start of a journey to build a legacy, completely build the legacy and it was the perfect opportunity for me. I really take it also as a responsibility for the fans of football and my fans, because I want to deliver something right for them that they can feel comfortable with the product and with everything we’re going to deliver to them.”

Kylian reflects on his lasting legacy:

“At the end of the day, it’s part of history, part of the legacy that I want to build.”
