investigation following the fire incident reported at Eldoret Hill School, noting that all 360 students were safely accounted for and handed over to their parents and guardians.

The NPA commended the school management, teachers and emergency responders for their efforts to ensure that no learner was harmed during the incident.

The parents’ body urged members of the public to avoid speculation over the cause of the fire and called on relevant government agencies and the police to conduct a thorough, professional and impartial investigation and establish what caused the incident.

The NPA said parents should remain important partners in efforts to improve safety in schools while allowing government agencies to carry out their responsibilities.

NPA wants school unrest taskforce gazetted

The association has also renewed its call for the government to move with speed and gazette the proposed taskforce on school unrest and school safety.

According to the NPA, the taskforce should bring together government officials, parents, teachers, school administrators and other stakeholders to examine the challenges currently affecting schools and propose practical, long-term solutions.

The association said previous education taskforces have provided important recommendations, but changing circumstances—including technology, social pressures, learner behaviour and security concerns—require a fresh assessment of the school environment.

The NPA stressed that the proposed taskforce should not be about assigning blame, but about understanding emerging challenges and developing sustainable prevention and response mechanisms.

Parents urged to work closely with schools

With the examination period approaching, the NPA urged principals, teachers, parents and learners to strengthen communication and cooperation.

The association noted that examination periods can bring additional academic and emotional pressure on learners, making early communication and intervention important in preventing problems from escalating.

The NPA also welcomed its continued cooperation with the Ministry of Education, including the Cabinet Secretary and Principal Secretary, saying education is a shared responsibility in which parents must have a meaningful role.

NPA seeks role in El Niño preparedness

The association has further asked the Ministry of Education to formally involve the NPA in preparations for anticipated El Niño rains and possible flooding.

Drawing lessons from the 2024 floods, the NPA said schools and communities need to prepare before heavy rains arrive by identifying vulnerable areas, assessing infrastructure, establishing emergency communication channels and developing clear evacuation and learner-safety plans.

During emergencies, the association said rapid communication between schools, parents, the Ministry and county authorities would be essential to ensuring learners are accounted for and receive timely assistance.

The NPA said parents could also mobilise local resources and support affected schools and families.

“Parents are not just recipients of information”

NPA President Silas David Obuhatsa said parents should be treated as active partners in school safety and emergency preparedness.

“Our children belong to all of us. Their safety requires government leadership, professional school management, committed teachers, responsible parents and active communities working together,” Obuhatsa said during a stakeholders forum on access to information organised by the Commission on Administrative Justice.

He said preparedness should begin before emergencies occur rather than waiting for a fire, flood or other disaster to bring stakeholders together.

NPA’s appeal

The National Parents Association is calling for:

A thorough investigation into the Eldoret Hill School fire and credible communication of the findings.

Parents and guardians to remain calm and avoid speculation.

Speedy gazettement of the proposed taskforce on school unrest and school safety.

Stronger communication between schools, parents and learners.

Deeper cooperation between the Ministry of Education and NPA on disaster preparedness.

Greater involvement of parents in school safety, early warning and emergency response.

Continued accountability by all stakeholders for the safety and welfare of learners.

The NPA said it remains ready to work with the Ministry of Education and other relevant agencies to strengthen school safety, disaster preparedness, prevention, early warning and emergency response across the country.

NPA SPEAKS AFTER ELDORET HILL FIRE: “DON’T SPECULATE — FIND THE TRUTH” Parents’ body calls for speedy school safety taskforce, stronger parent-school cooperation and urgent…

[26

post-6235","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-education
["GET
