From Dust to Dignity: Cabro Walkways Transform Nairobi\u2019s Busy Business Corridors as Traders Hail the Project<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Nairobi\u2019s once dusty and uneven pedestrian corridors are rapidly being transformed into modern, cleaner and more accessible walkways, with traders, students and pedestrians praising the ongoing installation of cabro paving blocks as a game changer for business and everyday movement across the city.<\/p>\n
The ambitious pedestrian improvement programme, spearheaded by the Nairobi City County Government, has already seen major sections of Moi Avenue, Tom Mboya Street, Taifa Lane and Haile Selassie Avenue upgraded, with works now extending beyond Clarion Hotel along Moi Avenue. Similar improvements are also underway along the JKIA-Westlands corridor through Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way, where new pedestrian infrastructure is taking shape.<\/p>\n

For small-scale traders who spend long hours on Nairobi\u2019s streets, the transformation has brought immediate relief by eliminating dust, improving accessibility and creating a more welcoming environment for customers.<\/p>\n
Maria Atani, who has operated a shoe business near Sawa Mall on Moi Avenue for the past four years, recalls how dust was once part of her daily routine.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis place near Sawa Mall used to be very dusty. Every morning my first duty was to pour water on the corridor to settle the dust before cleaning my shelves. Ever since the cabro was installed, the story has completely changed. We barely have dust anymore, people walk comfortably and smoothly. This is a noble idea that has transformed what was once a dusty place into a modern city corridor,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Just a few metres away near Nation Centre, clothing trader James Mujungu says the upgraded walkways have significantly improved the shopping experience for both traders and customers.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost of the time I am outside persuading customers to buy clothes. With the new cabro installation it has become much easier because people\u2019s shoes no longer get dirty as they used to. We are now enjoying the fruits of good governance. The contractors even worked at night and completed some sections within just two days,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Students and daily commuters have also welcomed the changes.<\/p>\n
William Okoth, a student who frequently walks through the Central Business District, said the improvements have made navigating the city safer and more comfortable.<\/p>\n
\u201cI walk a lot around town and lately it has become much easier because of the cabro installation. Our shoes don\u2019t get dirty like they used to, and this is good progress in the right direction,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Beyond the Central Business District, the county is constructing new pedestrian walkways as part of the Lower Mombasa Road rehabilitation and landscaping project. The works include modern walking paths, upgraded drainage systems and new bus bays stretching from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport through the stadium section towards Westlands, creating safer, more attractive and pedestrian-friendly public spaces.<\/p>\n
Governor Johnson Sakaja said the upgrades are part of a broader vision of restoring Nairobi\u2019s image as a modern African capital while improving the experience of residents, businesses and visitors alike.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have always said that Nairobi should work. A modern capital city must have quality walkways installed with cabros, beautiful boulevards and proper street lighting. Today it is easier to walk around the city and easier to do business along our busy corridors, where thousands of people pass every day without having to deal with dust. The work we are doing continues to change the story of our city,\u201d Sakaja said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the capital city, the face of Kenya and the gateway to our country. The impression this city creates matters a great deal, and that is why we will not relent until we deliver the Nairobi that residents deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Governor said the next phase of the programme will focus on expanding street lighting to improve safety and support Nairobi\u2019s growing 24-hour economy.<\/p>\n
\u201cLighting installations are next. We want every corner of this city to be well lit so that even those working around the clock can conduct their businesses with ease,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Sakaja also linked the city\u2019s physical transformation to ongoing security reforms, noting that the planned Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit, comprising 2,500 specially trained officers, will strengthen safety within the capital.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have also taken steps towards establishing the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit with 2,500 officers who will be specially trained to address the unique security challenges of the city,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
As construction crews continue extending the cabro network across Nairobi\u2019s key commercial corridors, many traders believe the investment is doing far more than improving infrastructure. They say it is restoring confidence in the city\u2019s public spaces, enhancing the customer experience and steadily transforming Nairobi into a cleaner, more walkable and business-friendly capital.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
