Stakeholders have called on the Government, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and other relevant agencies to intensify tax education and awareness campaigns to help Kenyans better understand taxes, import duties, tariffs, and related charges that directly affect the prices of essential goods, including menstrual products.<\/p>\n

The stakeholders noted that many importers, particularly women entrepreneurs, often face unexpected costs due to limited understanding of tax laws and customs procedures.<\/p>\n
They emphasized that while many tax provisions are clearly provided for in the Constitution and other legislation, there remains a significant knowledge gap among importers and businesses.<\/p>\n
They cited an example where menstrual products imported at a value of KSh 6 million may attract additional taxes, duties, and other charges, substantially increasing the final retail price. These added costs are ultimately passed on to consumers, making menstrual hygiene products less affordable for many women and girls.<\/p>\n
The stakeholders recommended expanding tax awareness and tariff education campaigns, especially for businesses involved in maritime trade and importation, to ensure importers understand applicable taxes and avoid unexpected expenses. They also encouraged stronger collaboration between KRA, industry experts, and private sector stakeholders to improve compliance and transparency.<\/p>\n

In addition, they urged the Government to adopt policies that encourage a steady supply of menstrual products in the Kenyan market. They argued that increasing the availability of these products would promote competition, helping to lower prices and improve access for women and girls across the country.<\/p>\n
The stakeholders further appealed to the Government to reduce the cost of electricity, noting that high power prices increase manufacturing, transportation, and business operating costs, which are eventually reflected in the prices paid by consumers.<\/p>\n
They concluded by emphasizing that improved tax education, lower production costs, and supportive government policies would make essential products more affordable, strengthen businesses, and contribute to improved public health and economic growth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
