{"id":4593,"date":"2026-07-14T17:12:23","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T17:12:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/livenation254.com\/?p=4593"},"modified":"2026-07-14T17:12:23","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T17:12:23","slug":"climate-environmental-activists-reject-dangotes-proposed-sh2-2-trillion-lamu-oil-refinery-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/livenation254.com\/?p=4593","title":{"rendered":"Climate, environmental activists reject Dangote\u2019s proposed Sh2.2 trillion Lamu oil refinery project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"narrow-container\">\n<div class=\"story-text\" data-id=\"story_page_story_content\">\n<div class=\"story-content ng-star-inserted\">\n<div class=\"content-inner-html copyTarget ng-star-inserted\">\n<article>Climate rights group Greenpeace Africa called on Tuesday for a halt to a proposed mega oil refinery project by Africa&#8217;s richest man, Aliko Dangote, in Kenya&#8217;s coastal region, warning of environmental risks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4595 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/livenation254.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/004015aabab7ec957ddaff839607950fb2ec5608.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/livenation254.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/004015aabab7ec957ddaff839607950fb2ec5608.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/livenation254.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/004015aabab7ec957ddaff839607950fb2ec5608-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/livenation254.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/004015aabab7ec957ddaff839607950fb2ec5608-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/livenation254.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/004015aabab7ec957ddaff839607950fb2ec5608-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The east African oil refinery, with a planned capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, was confirmed earlier this month to be located at Kenya&#8217;s Lamu port, ending months of speculation that Tanzania could host the project.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This project threatens to damage one of East Africa&#8217;s most fragile coastal ecosystems while locking Kenya into a risky fossil fuel future,&#8221; Sherelee Odayar, Greenpeace Africa Oil and Gas campaigner, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The group said the oil refinery, which is expected to take about 30 months to build, will lead to &#8220;habitat destruction, marine degradation, oil spill risk and dangerous air pollution&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lamu&#8217;s mangroves, coral reefs and seagrass beds are not expendable.
