O. Kodhe, the Constitution of Kenya guarantees every citizen the right to peacefully commemorate important national events such as Saba Saba Day without fear, intimidation, or interference from state security agencies.

“Kenya is a democratic nation founded on the principles of freedom, human rights, and the rule of law. Citizens must be allowed to celebrate and observe national occasions that shaped our democracy without harassment or intimidation,” Dr. Kodhe said.

IDEA noted that Kenya’s democracy was built through the courage and sacrifice of many freedom fighters and pro-democracy activists, including the late Raila Amolo Odinga, the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenneth Matiba, Martin Shikuku, Koigi wa Wamwere, James Orengo, Paul Muite, and many others who risked their lives in the fight for political pluralism and constitutional governance.

The institute observed that the low public participation witnessed during this year’s Saba Saba commemorations should concern all leaders regardless of political affiliation. It urged both the government and the opposition to preserve national commemorative days such as Saba Saba, Madaraka Day, and Jamhuri Day with dignity, patriotism, and respect.

IDEA expressed concern over reports of heavy police deployment, road barricades, and restrictions on movement during the recent Saba Saba commemorations, arguing that such actions discourage citizens from freely participating in national events.

The institute further stated that allegations of arrests, abductions, torture, and intimidation of human rights defenders and activists undermine the democratic gains achieved through years of struggle and sacrifice. Dr. Kodhe said such actions erode public confidence in democratic institutions and should be condemned by all peace-loving Kenyans.

Reflecting on Kenya’s struggle for multiparty democracy, Dr. Kodhe recalled his personal role as a journalist with Kyodo News of Japan and as Secretary of the Foreign Correspondents Association of East Africa, then based at Chester House in Nairobi. He said the association played a vital role in facilitating international media coverage of opposition leaders and pro-democracy activists during the struggle for political reforms.

Dr. Kodhe also recalled organizing numerous press conferences for opposition leaders and democracy advocates, including Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Raila Odinga, Kenneth Matiba, Martin Shikuku, Koigi wa Wamwere, Paul Muite, and others. He further recounted an incident in which a Financial Times correspondent contacted the late Professor George Saitoti to facilitate the removal of an alleged police informer who had infiltrated a press conference while posing as a journalist.

IDEA emphasized that institutions such as Chester House, where many international journalists including the late Mohamed Amin were based, played an important role in documenting Kenya’s democratic journey and ensuring that the struggle for freedom received international attention.

The institute concluded by urging all Kenyans to remain committed to protecting democracy, constitutionalism, human rights, and the rule of law, while honoring the sacrifices made by those who fought for the freedoms the country enjoys today.

By News Desk IDEA Calls on Kenya Kwanza Government to Respect Saba Saba Legacy and Safeguard Democratic Freedoms The Institute for Development and Leadership in…

[30

post-4383","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-updates
["GET
