The Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH, N) has once again affirmed its status as a regional and global leader in healthcare excellence after achieving its fifth consecutive Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, the highest international benchmark for quality and patient safety.<\/div>\n

AKUH, N made history in 2013 as the first hospital in East Africa to attain JCI accreditation and has successfully maintained this prestigious status through reaccreditation every three years, underscoring its unwavering commitment to safe, reliable, and patient-centered care.<\/div>\n

JCI accreditation is regarded as the gold standard in global healthcare, signifying that a hospital has undergone rigorous independent evaluation against internationally recognized standards for quality and patient safety. Hospitals must undergo a comprehensive audit every three years to retain accreditation.<\/div>\n
The latest reaccreditation follows an intensive on-site survey conducted in November 2025, during which AKUH, N achieved an exceptional 98.4 per cent score. The hospital was evaluated against 268 standards and nearly 1,200 measurable elements, covering patient safety, clinical care, infection prevention, medication management, facility safety, patient experience, documentation, emergency preparedness, leadership, staff training, and professional competencies.<\/div>\n

A score of 98.4 per cent places AKUH, N among a select group of hospitals globally recognized for outstanding reliability, safety, and clinical performance.<\/div>\n
\u201cThis accreditation is not simply a certificate on the wall. It defines our way of life and guides how we provide care, review patient outcomes, update our processes, and implement continuous improvement plans,\u201d added Mr. Khalani.<\/div>\n
The latest JCI recognition adds to AKUH, N\u2019s growing list of quality milestones. In 2020, the hospital became the first in sub-Saharan Africa and second on the continent to earn JCI\u2019s Centre of Excellence certification for the management of heart attacks, successfully reaccredited in 2023. In 2021, AKUH, N also became the first hospital in Africa to receive JCI Centre of Excellence accreditation for Acute Primary Stroke, with successful reaccreditation in July 2024.<\/div>\n

In addition, the hospital\u2019s laboratory services hold dual accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS), further reinforcing its commitment to global best practices.<\/div>\n
