University student leaders from leading institutions across Kenya have called for peaceful, responsible and lawful civic engagement during the planned June 25 commemoration, while warning against attempts by political actors to exploit the concerns of young people for partisan interests.
\nRepresentatives from Kenyatta University, the University of Nairobi, Zetech University, Mount Kenya University, KCA University, the Technical University of Kenya, St. Paul\u2019s University and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) said the rights of young people to assemble, demonstrate and express themselves must be exercised peacefully and within the law.<\/p>\n

\nThe leaders expressed concern that the planned commemoration could be infiltrated by political interests seeking to transform a civic movement into a platform for political mobilization and confrontation. They specifically cautioned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other politicians against attempting to appropriate Gen Z issues for personal or political gain.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs student leaders, we reject any attempt by political actors to hijack the genuine concerns of young people. The Gen Z agenda belongs to the youth and should not be used as a vehicle for political ambitions,\u201d the leaders said.
\nThe student representatives urged young people to remain vigilant and ensure that their voices are not manipulated into violence, destruction of property or unlawful activities, emphasizing that meaningful change is best achieved through peaceful civic participation.<\/p>\n
They also welcomed the ongoing compensation process for verified victims of human rights violations linked to demonstrations and public protests between 2013 and 2025, describing it as a significant step toward justice, accountability and national healing.<\/p>\n
While acknowledging that compensation cannot replace lost lives or erase the suffering endured by victims and their families, the leaders said the initiative demonstrates recognition of past injustices and the need to uphold the rights and dignity of all citizens.<\/p>\n
The student leaders concluded by urging all participants in the June 25 commemoration to honor the occasion peacefully, responsibly and in a manner that promotes unity, dialogue and democratic values.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
