NATIONAL PARENTS ASSOCIATION DEMANDS DECISIVE ACTION AGAINST FGM AND VIOLATION OF GIRLS’ RIGHTS IN MIGORI COUNTY<\/h3>\n

The National Parents Association (NPA) has expressed grave concern over the continued reports of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and other harmful cultural practices affecting young girls in Migori County, particularly within sections of the Kuria community.<\/p>\n

NPA Chairman Silas Obuhatsa has call upon the Government, through the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Education, law enforcement agencies, and all child protection institutions, to move swiftly and decisively to eliminate these illegal practices and protect vulnerable girls from abuse and exploitation.<\/p>\n

It is deeply troubling that Kenya, a country governed by a progressive Constitution and strong child protection laws, continues to witness acts of FGM in the 21st century. FGM remains illegal under Kenyan law and is a gross violation of the rights, dignity, health, and welfare of girls and women.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For decades, FGM and related harmful practices have disrupted the education of countless girls in Migori County. Many are forced out of school through early marriages, teenage pregnancies, psychological trauma, and social pressure. Others struggle academically due to emotional distress and prolonged absence from school, denying them the opportunity to achieve their educational and career aspirations.<\/p>\n

The National Parents Association notes with concern that these practices directly undermine national efforts aimed at achieving quality education, gender equality, the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework, and the Government’s goal of 100 percent transition and retention of learners in school.<\/p>\n

Every girl has a constitutional right to education, safety, dignity, and equal opportunities. No child should be subjected to harmful cultural practices against her will, nor should any individual or group be allowed to jeopardize the future of young girls through actions that violate the law.<\/p>\n

The Association fully supports the Government’s commitment to protecting children and urges authorities to take firm legal action against anyone found engaging in, facilitating, promoting, or concealing acts of FGM and related forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).<\/p>\n

Girls must be protected from all forms of violence, including FGM, forced marriages, sexual exploitation, physical abuse, and any practice that threatens their health, education, and future development.<\/p>\n

The National Parents Association further warns that the era of impunity must come to an end. Individuals who continue to perpetuate FGM and related harmful practices should expect to face the full force of the law. NPA will continue to monitor reports and work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.<\/p>\n

Recent media reports showing an individual allegedly admitting involvement in FGM are deeply disturbing and raise serious concerns about the continued existence of the practice. NPA calls upon investigative agencies to conduct thorough investigations and take appropriate legal action wherever evidence supports criminal prosecution.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

FGM exposes girls to severe and lifelong consequences, including excessive bleeding, infections, childbirth complications, chronic pain, psychological trauma, emotional distress, loss of self-esteem, and in some cases death. It robs girls of their bodily autonomy, dignity, and opportunities for personal growth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Association urges parents, community leaders, religious leaders, teachers, and local administrators to work together in protecting girls and promoting lawful alternatives that preserve cultural identity while respecting human rights and child protection laws.<\/p>\n

NPA also appeals to development partners, civil society organizations, well-wishers, and community stakeholders willing to support parental engagement and empowerment initiatives in Kuria and across Migori County to partner with the Association in rescuing young girls from Gender-Based Violence and ensuring they remain in school.<\/p>\n

Together, we must build a society where every girl is protected, educated, empowered, and given the opportunity to achieve her full potential.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
