Researchers examined depressive symptoms, workplace experiences, and the influence of social and digital support systems on mental health outcomes.

According to the findings, 16.9% of respondents reported moderately severe depressive symptoms, while 5.5% experienced severe symptoms. The study identified workplace stress, discrimination, limited social support, and increased vulnerability among younger and early-career healthcare professionals as key contributors to poor mental health outcomes.

Speaking on the findings, Professor Zul Merali, Founding Director of the Brain and Mind Institute and Co-Principal Investigator of the UZIMA DS Project, emphasized the urgency of addressing the issue.

“This study highlights the reality of what healthcare workers are carrying every day. The findings give us a clear chance to take action and improve the systems that support our healthcare workers,” said Professor Merali.

The research points to the fact that mental health challenges among healthcare workers are not solely individual concerns but are deeply influenced by systemic and structural issues within healthcare institutions. Workplace pressures, organizational culture, and inadequate support mechanisms were cited as significant factors contributing to the growing mental health burden.

The report calls for comprehensive, system-wide interventions, including integrating mental health into workforce planning, occupational health programs, and broader health sector strengthening initiatives.

At the policy level, the findings provide evidence for the need to prioritize healthcare worker wellbeing as a core component of building resilient and effective health systems.

Mary Karongo, Deputy Director of Counselling at the Ministry of Health’s Division of Mental Health, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening mental health support for healthcare professionals.

“We recognize that supporting healthcare workers’ mental health is key to better care and stronger health systems. The Ministry is committed to integrating mental health into workforce and occupational health strategies,” said Karongo.

The study also identified promising opportunities for innovation, with many healthcare workers expressing a willingness to engage with digital mental health solutions such as mobile applications and wearable technologies. Researchers believe these tools could play a crucial role in early detection, continuous monitoring, and timely mental health support.

The findings underscore that the wellbeing of healthcare workers is fundamental to the quality of healthcare delivery and the overall performance of health systems. Researchers are now urging stakeholders to adopt integrated, preventive, and sustainable approaches that place healthcare worker wellbeing at the center of health sector reforms.

By Jeff Kizzilah Digital Editor A groundbreaking study by the Aga Khan University Brain and Mind Institute (AKU-BMI) has revealed alarming levels of depression…

[31

post-3086","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-health
["GET
