Speaking during a press briefing on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the school in Gilgil, Nakuru County, Murkomen described the incident as a heartbreaking national tragedy that has shaken both the police fraternity and the country at large.<\/p>\n
The CS confirmed that at least 16 students lost their lives in the inferno, while several others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals. He noted that the emotional pain has been especially severe for police officers whose children were among the victims.<\/p>\n
Murkomen conveyed the government\u2019s heartfelt condolences to the affected families, students, teachers, and the entire Utumishi Girls\u2019 Academy community, assuring Kenyans that every effort is being made to support survivors and uncover the cause of the deadly fire.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a deeply painful moment for our nation. Many of the students in this institution are children of officers who dedicate their lives to protecting Kenyans every day. Today, they are mourning their own children,\u201d said Murkomen.<\/p>\n
