Nairobi Rail Revolution Begins as Mainga Launches Landmark Commuter Upgrade Plan<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Kenya Railways Corporation Managing Director Philip Mainga today convened a high-level stakeholders\u2019 meeting to officially mark the commencement of consultancy services for the feasibility study, preliminary design, and preparation of bidding documents for the upgrading of the Nairobi Commuter Rail Network.<\/p>\n

The consultancy, being implemented under the Kenya Urban Mobility Improvement Project (KUMIP) and funded by the World Bank, is set to transform urban mobility across the Nairobi Metropolitan Area through the modernization and expansion of commuter rail services.<\/p>\n

The comprehensive study will cover the entire Nairobi Commuter Rail Network, incorporating both existing lines and proposed new corridors. Priority focus will be placed on the Nairobi Central Station (NCS) to Thika corridor, a critical route expected to significantly enhance connectivity and reduce congestion.<\/p>\n

The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Roads and Transport, Nairobi County Government, Kiambu County Government, the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NAMATA), Kenya Railways, and other implementing agencies.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, Mr. Mainga reaffirmed Kenya Railways\u2019 commitment to modernizing and expanding the national rail network, highlighting the pivotal role of commuter rail in easing traffic congestion and enhancing mobility within the capital and its environs.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He emphasized the importance of integrated transport systems, noting that the project will align with flagship developments such as Railway City and other urban infrastructure initiatives to ensure seamless, efficient connectivity.<\/p>\n

Mr. Mainga further assured stakeholders of Kenya Railways\u2019 full support and facilitation to ensure the successful and timely delivery of the project.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Also speaking at the event, Akiko<\/strong> Kishiue, Senior Urban Transport Specialist and Team Lead for KUMIP at the World Bank, commended Kenya Railways and stakeholders for the progress achieved so far, particularly the engagement of the consultant, Dar Al Handasah.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
