Union Demands Appointment of a Substantive Vice-Chancellor<\/em><\/h3>\n

The Universities\u2019 Academic Staff Union (UASU), , wishes to express its deep concern over the ongoing leadership vacuum and the rapidly deteriorating state of the , Kenya\u2019s oldest and most prestigious institution of higher learning.<\/p>\n

Since September 2024, the University has been under the stewardship of a Vice-Chancellor serving in an acting capacity. Equally concerning is that all Deputy Vice-Chancellor positions continue to be held in acting capacities for prolonged periods. This lack of substantive leadership has significantly undermined institutional stability, strategic direction, and effective governance.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The situation is further compounded by alarming financial challenges. According to the February 2026 report by the , the is currently burdened with debts exceeding KSh 15.9 billion<\/strong>, the highest liability recorded among public universities in Kenya.<\/p>\n

UASU warns that the continued delay in appointing substantive office holders risks plunging the institution into deeper crisis, potentially affecting academic standards, staff welfare, and service delivery to students.<\/p>\n

  2. Urgent recruitment and confirmation of Deputy Vice-Chancellors.<\/li>\n
  3. Transparent and accountable financial management reforms.<\/li>\n
  4. Government intervention to stabilize the institution and address the debt crisis.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    UASU remains committed to safeguarding the integrity, reputation, and future of the . The Union calls upon the Ministry of Education and relevant authorities to act swiftly before the situation escalates further.<\/p>\n

    Failure to address these concerns may compel the Union to take appropriate action to protect the interests of staff and students.<\/p>\n
