Political tensions within the Mt Kenya region appear to be intensifying after outspoken remarks by James Gakuya, a close ally of Rigathi Gachagua, regarding the potential 2027 presidential ticket configuration.<\/p>\n
Speaking amid growing political realignments, Gakuya disclosed that Gachagua and his Democratic Conservative Party (DCP) allies are increasingly uneasy about the possibility of William Ruto retaining Kithure Kindiki as his running mate in the next General Election.<\/p>\n
According to Gakuya, the Gachagua camp is \u201cpraying day and night\u201d that Kindiki is not picked, arguing that such a move would significantly weaken Gachagua\u2019s political influence in the Mt Kenya region.<\/p>\n
\u201cRigathi will be very comfortable if Kindiki is not Ruto\u2019s running mate. He will be sure that the mountain will be solid and he can win approximately 95% of Mt Kenya,\u201d Gakuya stated.<\/p>\n
The remarks come in the wake of shifting political dynamics following the Mbere North by-election, which has raised questions about Gachagua\u2019s grip on the region he has often referred to as his political stronghold.<\/p>\n
Analysts suggest that the inclusion of Kindiki on Ruto\u2019s ticket could tilt the balance of power, particularly in Mt Kenya East counties \u2014 Embu, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi \u2014 where Kindiki is perceived to command significant influence.<\/p>\n
Further complicating the equation is the sizeable voting bloc in Mt Kenya West and among diaspora voters from the region, many of whom are seen as increasingly aligning with President Ruto\u2019s camp.<\/p>\n
Gakuya\u2019s sentiments have sparked debate over whether Gachagua\u2019s influence as the self-styled Mt Kenya kingpin is waning, or if the region is entering a new phase of political fragmentation ahead of 2027.<\/p>\n
As political camps begin early positioning, the battle for Mt Kenya \u2014 often regarded as a decisive voting bloc \u2014 is shaping up to be one of the defining contests in the next electoral cycle.<\/p>\n
