The Nairobi Hospital marked World Kidney Day 2026 with a public awareness and community engagement event aimed at promoting early detection and prevention of kidney disease. The event was held under the global theme \u201cKidney Health for All \u2013 Caring for People, Protecting the Planet.\u201d<\/p>\n

The initiative brought together healthcare professionals and members of the public to highlight the growing burden of kidney-related illnesses and the importance of regular health screenings.<\/p>\n

According to global health experts, chronic kidney disease affects an estimated 850 million people worldwide, making it a significant public health concern. In Kenya, the prevalence of kidney-related illnesses continues to rise, partly due to the increasing cases of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Medical experts warn that without early intervention and improved public awareness, many individuals remain undiagnosed until kidney damage has already progressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cKidney disease is often referred to as a silent condition because many people do not experience symptoms until it is already advanced. Through initiatives like these, we hope to encourage people to prioritize regular health checks and adopt healthier lifestyles that protect kidney function. Early screening and awareness are critical in preventing complications and improving long-term health outcomes,\u201d said Dr. Koge.<\/p>\n

As part of the hospital\u2019s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, members of the public were invited to benefit from free health checks, including kidney screening, urinalysis, blood sugar testing, body mass index (BMI) assessments, and blood pressure monitoring.<\/p>\n

Participants also received educational materials highlighting practical steps to maintain kidney health, including maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, managing blood pressure, and seeking regular medical check-ups.<\/p>\n

For many attendees, the screening provided an important opportunity to better understand their personal health status. Several participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that access to free screenings and expert medical advice helps raise awareness about kidney conditions that often go unnoticed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Community outreach programs such as this play a vital role in bridging the gap between healthcare institutions and the public by encouraging preventive care and early medical intervention.<\/p>\n
