Pres. William Ruto and Johnson Sakaja have unveiled a landmark KSh80 billion cooperation agreement between the National Government and the Nairobi City County Government aimed at transforming the capital into a more livable, secure, and efficient city for its 4.4 million residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ambitious pact outlines sweeping investments in lighting, power connectivity, water supply, sanitation, roads, drainage, and solid waste management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lighting and Power ConnectivityUnder the agreement, KSh3.7 billion has been committed to complete 10,000 unfinished streetlights and install an additional 40,000 new lights across the city to enhance security and boost economic activity at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further, the National Government, through Kenya Power, will invest KSh1.5 billion in transformers and last-mile electricity connections targeting informal settlements to expand access to reliable power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Water Supply ExpansionTo address persistent water shortages, KSh2.1 billion will be invested at the Ng\u2019ethu Treatment Plant to curb daily losses of approximately 50 million litres of water.An additional KSh3 billion will fund the Gigiri\u2013Shauri Moyo evacuation corridor project to stabilize and extend water supply to high-demand zones across Nairobi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Major Sanitation OverhaulIn one of the largest allocations, KSh9 billion has been set aside for the construction of two parallel 27-kilometre trunk sewer lines along the Nairobi River Corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another KSh6 billion will finance a new sewer treatment plant with capacity to treat 60 million litres of wastewater per day.To boost connectivity, KSh3 billion will go toward last-mile sewer connections, while KSh15 billion has been earmarked for long-term sewer expansion across the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roads and Drainage UpgradesThe agreement also commits KSh8.7 billion toward upgrading roads, bridges, and drainage systems. Additionally, KSh1.7 billion is being mobilized for 59 kilometres of roads under Phase Two beginning April 2026.In every ward, roads will be improved under a KSh5 billion programme, complemented by KSh3.7 billion from the county government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A further KSh1 billion will support enhanced drainage systems to mitigate flooding.Solid Waste Management<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To tackle waste management challenges, KSh4 billion will be allocated toward solid waste management reforms, including the provision of 100 acres of land for Material Recovery Facilities. The National Government will supplement this effort with an additional KSh2 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Vision for a Global African MetropolisPresident Ruto and Governor Sakaja said the comprehensive infrastructure package will strengthen Nairobi\u2019s standing as a globally respected African metropolis that reflects Kenya\u2019s national ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreement marks one of the most extensive coordinated investments between the two levels of government, signaling a renewed push to modernize the capital city and improve service delivery for millions of residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
